The Duties of a Trainee Accountant

Accountants maintain accurate records of an organization's income and expenses, payroll, inventories, and financial statements. Accountants can also work for individual clients and families. Trainee accountants, typically called accounting clerks within the industry, work under the supervision of a manager or senior accountant to learn the day-to-day duties that take place in the accounting department of an organization or business. Trainee accountants can work for private or public companies, nonprofit organizations, hospitals, medical clinics, or government agencies.

Duties and Responsibilities

An accountant-in-training works with a senior accountant, manager, or controller. Daily duties can include making income or expense entries into the accounting system. Small accounting offices might have the trainee accountant entering vendor invoices, paying bills, and creating invoices for their clients. In larger organizations, these duties are typically separated by disciplines, such as accounts payables, payroll, or accounts receivables. Trainee accountants check entries for accuracy; they make necessary corrections and file documents as needed. Some trainee accountants might work on payroll, quarterly taxes, asset inventory, cost accounting, or other disciplines within the accounting department.

Training and Education

Most accounting clerks or trainee accountants start with a high school diploma, but most organizations prefer at least an associate's degree in business or accounting. Some accounting trainees might also hold a bachelor's degree in business or a related field. Trainee accountants get most of their training on-the-job, but might also attend seminars and workshops to stay abreast of changes in the field.

Career Development

To further their accounting career, the trainee will follow up with a bachelor's degree in business or accounting or seek certification as a public accountant. Once certified and licensed as a certified public accountant (CPA) in your state, you can prepare income tax reports for clients or open an accounting business service for a variety of individual and business clients. Once certified, you can also perform financial audits.
